Dangers of Policing
We always watch on television or hear on the radio about a police officer somewhere in America who has been hurt or killed. There are some people out there who might not be feeling comfortable about the work of the police officers, and therefore they would wish to do anything that will paralyze the working of a law enforcement officer. A police officer goes through a lot of dangers while they are carrying out their role of maintaining law and order in the society.
During the month of August in the year 2016, two black men were shot and killed by the police officers. The following day, a 32-year-old Minnesota resident by the name Philando Castile was shot and killed CITATION Rou16 \l 1033 (Roufa, 2016). A video footage that clearly showed how the police officers shot the man was spread through the internet leading to an outcry by the citizens about the killing by the police. On July 5th, Alton Sterling was gunned down by two police officers in Louisiana. After the brutal killings by the police, many protests were held by citizens who demanded the end of police violence. During the Black Lives Matter protest, six police officers were killed in Dallas following a sniper attack that occurred during the protests. On July 17th, 2016, in an attack that is viewed as a revenge by most of the people, three police officers were again killed in Louisiana the same city where Alton Sterling was killed twelve days earlier. In both of the killings that happened, the shooters were the African Americans who complained about the recent killings of the police officers that targeted the black people in America CITATION Eri16 \l 1033 (Erickson, 2016). It was also realized that the shooters had no connections to the Black Lives Matters protest, but rather they acted in their capacity.
According to statics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigations, averagely, 64 police officers were killed per year between the year 1980 and 2014. This figure shows a small percentage given that the approximate number of police officers who work in the United States is estimated to be one million. In the year 2013, approximately 50,000 law enforcement officers faced assault cases CITATION Rou16 \l 1033 (Roufa, 2016). It, therefore, means that for every group of one hundred police officers, nine of them faced the attacks.
