For the longest time the police force has had the benefit of using informants to provide them with reliable information about quite a number of aspects to help ease the investigative work (Lund, 2012). This is a crucial piece of the investigative work, as much of the information brings closer the much-needed assistance of arresting and apprehending criminals and more importantly reducing the rate of crime on the streets (Government of Alberta, 2017). Given the massive categories of activities that police have to work with in reference to crime and justice, there are number of types of useful information informants can offer the police.
One of the most common type of information informants can offer the police is with reference to criminal activities in the area. There are quite a number of criminal activities that take place at any given time and place (Lund, 2012). Some of which may go unnoticed by the police and justice system in general. However, with the help of informants the police are able to get informed on such activities and act on the information to determine the legitimacy of the same (Law Officer, 2008). Where the information is true and significant, the police will then launch investigations on the activities and make the appropriate arrests where possible. The other type of information informants may offer police is with reference to politics. Specifically, informants may offer the police information on corruption activities in the government. This with reference to such activities such as bribes and fraud among others (Government of Alberta, 2017). Without such information, the police may never get to know certain government officials are involved in corruption activities. The other type of information, informants may offer to the police is with reference to business fraud (Natapoff, 2010). This is with close reference to fraudulent behaviors in the business circles where certain parties may be duping their customers and stealing their money.
