A characteristic of Kant’s good will is that it is free of particular interests. A free will is autonomous and is guided by reason. A heteronomous will is guided by sentiment, context, or self-interest.
"Inside a Texas children’s hospital, an 11-month-old girl [named Tinslee] lies paralyzed and in constant pain. She can breathe only with a ventilator. A suite of medications keeps her alive. Tinslee’s condition, doctors say, will never improve. The infant’s health-care team at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth says that every medical procedure it performs on her causes only more suffering and that she should be allowed to die naturally and peacefully. Her mother is begging for her daughter to be kept alive. The emotionally charged decision about Tinslee’s fate fell to a Tarrant County district court judge, who on Thursday ruled in favor of the hospital" (1).

A Characteristic of Kant’s Good Will
Kant argues that no consequences can have a primary moral worth not unless it is good in and of themselves; Good Will. Goodwill opts to perform a moral duty that is, however, dictated by reasons. Thus, Kant believes that actions are morally right depending on their motive.
The Physician's will is based on logic and reason in the scenario. Thus it is autonomous, meaning the Physician acted based on logic and reasons, and he was compelled to take the matter to the law. According to the Physician, nothing could have been done to the little girl as she is kept alive by a suite of medications and breathes through a ventilator. In addition, any procedure conducted on the baby does not help but increases the baby's suffering. Therefore, their advice to the mother is based on logic and reasoning that there is no need to subject the baby to more suffering (Burnor & Raley, 2022). Notably, the Physician's actions are actual and provide a good purpose for the baby, which Kant describes as a hypothetical imperative. Therefore, the Physician's will is to save the baby from suffering, allowing her to die naturally.
