Rapid technological advancement has significantly contributed to effective and faster communication between communities. In particular, with an electronic device that can connect to the Internet, one can share information with any part of the world. The Internet has significantly contributed to societal growth and togetherness since people in remote areas can communicate with others in different parts of the world.
“How Minnesota Teachers Invented a Proto-Internet More Centered on Community Than Commerce” by Joy Lisi Rankin has made me rethink how I use the Internet. Rankin portrays that computer games, such as The Oregon Trail, can bring individuals together (Rankin, 2019). In reality, I have played numerous video games with my friends, and I agree with the author that these computer programs unite people. Every player must meet all tasks associated with his or her character in the game. Computer games promote teamwork and togetherness. Rankin made me reconsider the significance of the Internet in my life. I realized that I use the web to communicate, shop, transact, banking, talk with friends, read, and research. In other words, without the Internet, I can do very little since almost everything in my life rotate around the web.
The Internet is the only tool that can reduce unemployment, suicide, poverty, addiction, and other problems facing humanity. The video “CA Broadband Bruce: Fighting Canada’s Digital Divide,” depicts that not all remote areas are privileged to have an Internet connection.
