Internet Infrastructure
Joe Rodgers (2014), in a series of video tutorials, describes the underlying infrastructure that makes the internet near-ubiquity. Using the internet infrastructure at the University of South Florida (USF) as a blueprint, Rodgers highlights every little bit of technology, hardware, and software that makes up the internet in a large enterprise. Roberts notes that network interconnectivity can be layered according to the institutions’ structure and the different layers interconnected using cabbling technologies with the help of patch panels. To set up the internet, several networking devices play an important role: switches, routers, wireless access points, and cabling devices (Rodgers, 2014). Redundancy is the other core element of a computer network, ensuring that connectivity is not interrupted when one connectivity is damaged (Rodgers, 2014). The different aggregation points pointed out by Rodgers separate the network infrastructure to the access layer, distributions layer, then the core, which is the backbone of the network infrastructure (Rodgers, 2014a). According to the presenter, air conditioning, power backups, and a high level of redundancy are the basic consideration when designing a network infrastructure.
End devices that sit on the access layer of the network infrastructure follow the same path whenever connected to the internet. Routing is an important aspect in internet communication where networking devices, in essence, routers, employ a routing protocol termed as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) to channel correct traffic to the intended device via the network (Rodgers, 2014a). Internet service providers (ISP) such as cogent, TWTC, and FLR provide internet connectivity to Wide Area Networks (WAN) such as USF via single-mode fiber optics (Rodgers, 2014b). In a case where an institution obtains its internet from multiple ISPs, the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is used to determine the most appropriate ISP for routing the traffics.
