Defense in Depth is a cybersecurity initiative that aims to isolate security layers while protecting the valuable data and information. The controls and barriers are necessary to stop the activity of a malicious user or software that may exploit a vulnerability or weakness and compromise the network. Perimeter security is responsible for protecting the first line as far as communications are concerned, with firewalls being the most commonly used. The ability to monitor network activities including when there are different connections is important to improve cybersecurity. There is a lower risk of attackers bypassing the existing access controls when there are layers of security, as represented in the network diagram.
Networks include the physical structure, physical connection modes, and data flows where there are two or more computers that share resources. The network hardware allows transmission of signals and access to material, which connects to the computers. The network and its connections include the elements and distribution of a network, and in creating a network the network devices, servers, computers, printers, and other devices are included. The Wi-Fi is protected via the firewall and the IPS is collected to the firewall then the switch is connected to the IPS. Additionally, the IPS and IDS need to be managed appropriately, keeping them updated on the security policies and auditing events.
