Women in Congress
Women are an embodiment of love, strength, self-sacrifice, and bravery. Women, in general, have evolved from not being people to being recognized by society and even elected into offices. Before World War, women were only designated to serve in their houses, look after children and commit to their marriage, but after the world war, a tremendous change occurred (Angevine, 2017). Women started challenging men into doing things they were not designated to do by society. They have achieved great success in diverse fields like sports, academics, and politics. Women are becoming elite and are now in competition with men in all aspects of life. Women are no longer considered inadequate for political roles; hence, many women in the U.S Congress.
Proportion of Women in Congress
The U.S 117th congress consisted of over a quarter of all members being women. When we count both women in the Senate and house of representatives, they occupy roughly 144- 539 seats, increasing from 96 women who held seats in 112th Congress. In 2020, a proportion of 126 women was serving in Congress. A total of 25 women holds seats in the Senate, and 101 hold seats in the House of Representatives (Ocampo and Ray, 2019). Four of these women are non-voting delegates. Of the total 16 women, 4 of them are women of color, that is Latina is thirteen, twenty-two is black, Asian Americans are eight, Native Americans are two, two Middle Eastern/North African, and one interracial.
Reflect on What these Patterns Say About the Nature of Representation
These patterns show a great representation of diversity in Congress. Each subgroup or minority is represented in the U.S congress. The racial and ethnic composition of the U.S Congress consists of all gender, races, and ethnic groups help make critical decisions that affect the lives of every person in the U.S.
