The prison reform movement was driven by the need to improve conditions within the correctional facilities, facilitate the mentally ill to leave prisons and be admitted into correctional and support services, train prisoners, and create a more effective penal system. The prison reform movement is tailored to address social and practical challenges faced by previously incarcerated individuals. The current strategies employed by the justice system to foster rehabilitation and public safety are increasingly ineffective, with 83% of previously incarcerated being rearrested in the future (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2018). The prison reform movement is important because it constitutes a practical remedy for the current problems in the United States (U.S.) justice system. Prison reform emphasizes restoring those affected by crime and enhancing public safety by creating an effective prison system culture.
