The Electoral College vs. Popular Vote
A section of political experts have termed the Electoral College as a distortion of presidential campaigns, a way of disenfranchising voters, and a force to drive partisanship. There have been calls to have constitutional reforms in favor of a single national popular vote and apply the concept of “one-person, one-vote,” although such demands have sparked heated debates among policy analysts and the academia. According to supporters of Electoral College abolition, the system denies a great majority of Americans their effective political voice in the presidential elections results. As provided in the U.S. Constitution, the decision on who becomes the U.S. president is determined by the Electoral College, based on the total number of votes cast in each state. This implies that a presidential candidate with a majority of electoral votes, which is more than 270, is automatically declared the winner even after losing the popular vote. This is the case that has been seen in previous elections where George W. Bush and Donald J. Trump were declared winners with the electoral votes. This move has been supported by some politicians, including President Trump, claiming that it will avoid past cases of distortions in the presidential campaigns, among other benefits.
