1956: Soviet invasion of Hungary
One of the most significant events that took place during the Cold War was the invasion of Hungary by the Soviet Union. At the time of the invasion, the Hungarians had been on a protest for two weeks. The people were revolting against the Soviet imposed policies in their government. The people were on the streets demanding that they were given more political freedom and from the Soviet oppression. It had been one of the major challenges that the Soviet had had to deal with since the fight with Nazis. The Soviet was vicious in their pursuit to crush the protest (HISTORY.com, 2017). Thousands of the Hungarians were killed while others were wounded. More than a quarter of a million Hungarians had to flee their country in the fear of the brutality from the Soviets. After some period of calm, there was then another invasion by the Soviet after, the Hungarians under the leadership of Nagy, tried to get out of the Warsaw Pact tying Hungary into the communist bloc (HISTORY.com, 2017).
