Black Lives Matter, White Supremacy, and Voting
Slavery, racial discrimination, profiling, and other injustices targeting people, resulted in the civil rights movement championed by influential figures such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Despite the introduction of policies and regulations that support racial equality, people of color are still exposed to white supremacy that is often championed by the criminal justice system, through racial profiling and police brutality. For this reason, campaigns such as Black Lives Matter have gained significant momentum to champion for racial equality and end police brutality and profiling that primarily target black Americans. This paper discusses the black lives matter campaign drawn from the need to overcome white supremacy and the voting rights movement.
The Black Lives Matter movement was introduced to challenge the widespread structural racism that existed despite the enactment of favorable laws supporting equality. The focus included social media hashtags that were meant to increase awareness of systematic racial profiling and discrimination. More recently, in 2020, the campaign was reignited following the death of George Floyd in police custody (Mir & Zanoni, 2021). The primary essence of its formation was to eliminate white supremacy and champion equality to overcome the violence and biased criminal justice system that targeted African Americans.
Since most of the atrocities targeted people of color against the dominant white race, the Black Lives Matter movement was introduced to challenge the white supremacy that had been at the center of structural racism (Walker et al., 2021). The focus is on the fact that racial inequalities and injustices were supported by white police violence targeting African Americans (Mir & Zanoni, 2021). The inequalities, including inadequate access to affordable housing, healthcare, and education, primarily affected blacks and often favored white dominance supported by arbitrary violence from the police.
