1. How does “Black Power Mixtape” shape your understanding of Black Power as an ideology for gaining civil rights? Use parenthetical citations and at least two examples from the documentary and integrate lecture.
The Black Power Mixtape discussed how some actions of African Americans advocated for civil rights through non-violent approaches first (Blacker The Berry, 2019). The beliefs of the people about asserting for their rights and defending their honor against white supremacy, racism, and police brutality were based on dignity and honor. They believe that it can be upheld even if there are very obvious injustices such as segregation and exlusion (like in buses, where Black people absolutely need to sit at the back despite paying the same price as the whites). Their ideologies preserved their identities and proved that they are non-violent and that they will take violence only as a last resort. These principles were also embodied by the Black Panther Party, whose main goals were to help the people and end police brutality (“Hist 17 Lesson 10: Black Power”). This made me understand that power does not only come from fear and violence, and it can also take the form of more peaceful approaches, no matter how negatively the media portrays the events of the past.
