1. Read:  Carlan, P.E., Nored, L.S., & Downey R.A. (2010). Officer preferences for male backup: The influence of gender and police partnering. Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology, 26, 4-10.

2.  Write a critique of this article that addresses the following questions/areas (do not just indicate YES or NO, explain your response).  Provide the response below each question:

1. What was the purpose/reason for this study? Was the purpose adequately explained? How so?

2. Is the research question in this study important? Why?

3. What are the independent and dependent variables in this study? Were the variables clearly defined and do these operational definitions correspond to what the researchers intended to measure? Explain.

4. What was the sample? Was the sample adequate and representative? How so?

5. What was the design (method of collecting data)? Was the design of the study well thought out and could anything have affected the internal validity (the findings made) of the study? Explain.

6. Do the conclusions follow from the results/findings presented? If not, where did they go astray?

7. Are the conclusions generalizable/applicable to other settings/populations (i.e., is there external validity)? If no, why?  If yes, which settings/population?

Officer Preferences for Male Backup: The Influence of Gender and Police Partnering
The article Officer Preferences for Male Backup: The Influence of Gender and Police Partnering by Carlan et al. presents findings from a study conducted at the southern state municipal police departments. The study aimed to examine the impact of the professional and demographic characteristics of municipal police officers on the preference for male police officers as a backup. The research independent (Officer Preferences for male backup) and dependent (the influence of gender and police partnering) variables were clearly defined and corresponded to what the researcher intended to study. This study is significant as it continued further studies and gave credibility to its finding. Further, it presented facts about the much hypothesized male patriarchal stereotype which dominates critical careers such as policing, legal and doctoral careers.
Essentially, the researchers used questionnaires to survey and collect information. The questionnaires were mailed to the head of the department, which in turn presented them to their subordinates. A total of 1114 samples were collected to present findings and conclusions. However, the samples were not adequate to produce a conclusive response. This is because the United States police department comprises approximately 18000 sworn police officers, representing 6.2% of the total population. Also, the data collection method would affect internal validity as it was not directly given to the officers but to the head of departments who gave the questionnaire to their juniors. Even though it was anonymous, individuals would be afraid of their bosses and lie in the questionnaire.
