Scenario: Yuki
Yuki is a four-year-old female growing up in a two-parent family and has one older sister (age 7). She lives in a middle-class neighborhood where there are many young children and a neighborhood park. She likes to go to the park and play with other children. Her parents have become very concerned that while she can talk, her words do not sound like those of other children. She often seems to misunderstand what others say, though her parents know that she understands the words. They are frustrated because it seems that she can understand what she hears occasionally, but not always. They know that she will struggle in kindergarten next year if this does not change. They had her hearing tested. It is normal. The doctor suspects Yuki has an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).

“Word recognition” mentions the constituent procedure of language acknowledgment and learning. In simple terms, it relates to a process learners master to identify words and parts of words (Weber & Scharenborg, 2012). Word recognition is characterized by transmuting written or transcribed and verbalized words into language representation. The theory or approach of word recognition or acknowledgment includes cohort and trace models. According to the Cohort model, individuals first consider what letters will come next when they identify a word. However, once they add additional letters to the word, the letters formed will be eliminated from the list.

Conventionally, APD denotes how the human brain comprehends speech. It is a sensual discrepancy affecting listening skills, speech-language awareness, and wisdom abilities. Individuals affected by APD have normal intelligence and hearing abilities (He & Arunachalam, 2017). Victims of APD cannot differentiate or pick up between loud and clear sounds. On the other hand, they cannot distinguish between bat and cat. Furthermore, APD victims may perceive that sixteen and sixty sound the same. Word recognition is a crucial concept since it aid people to read fluently and stand a chance to identify and recognize words easily, which can be useful in understanding victims of APD.
On the other hand, word recognition helps children recognize words that improve their vocabularies and use words confidently (Weber & Scharenborg, 2012). A child with APD infection like Yuki may express attributes such as becoming too sensitive to loud sounds, attention deficit, and forgetfulness. Others might appear confused, have fake illnesses, and perform below average.
