Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease refers to a condition that causes the inflammation of the lungs resulting in obstruction of airflow from the lungs. The Centers for Disease Control (2021) describes COPD as a group of diseases that all have the effect of causing blockage of airflow. The Centers for Disease control further provides some examples of these conditions, which include chronic bronchitis, among other conditions. Some symptoms of this condition include wheezing and difficulty in breathing (Celli & Wedzicha, 2019).
COPD directly affects the respiratory system. When the flow of air to the lungs is affected, it simply means that the respiratory system will have a hard time ensuring the carbon dioxide is efficiently eliminated and that oxygen is adequately supplied. As McCance & Huether (2019) notes, a disorder affecting one system also affects other systems. By extension, COPD also affects the cardiovascular system.
