Introduction
The medical world is experiencing many challenges ranging from grappling with chronic illness to individuals having complicated disorders. In this vein, clinicians are compelled to utilize appropriate approaches when dealing with unique health conditions. Noteworthy, nurses must take research seriously. Benign positional vertigo (BPV) and Meniere's diseases lend themselves to the discussion as a viable subject. These diseases can best be mediated by having a clear understanding of each disorder's presentation, pathophysiology, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment, which this paper delves into in length.
Presentation
The first process of addressing a health condition is interpreting aspects that lead to a particular disease diagnosis. Benign positional vertigo disorder is attributed to a state of a person experiencing a spinning sensation in the head to be relative to gravity (Bhattacharyya et al., n.d.). A patient is more likely to be diagnosed with BPV if one experiences increased rates of dizziness. Additionally, a BPV patient is more likely to present issues with individual health-related quality of life and daily performances. For example, because of the persistent falls exhibited by BPV patients, one is rendered incapable of either running or instructing when one is a teacher. On the contrary, Meniere’s disease is characterized by a patient presenting low-to mid-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (Basura et al., 2020; Dlugaiczy, 2021). Noteworthy, a patient suffering from this illness exhibits ear fullness with literature noting that this condition often influences vertigo. This revelation means that BPV and Meniere’s diseases are different in presentation; the diseases have a common spreading factor: vertigo.
Pathophysiology
Diseases distort the body's normal functioning, and Benign positional vertigo (BPV) and Meniere's are not an exception. Meniere’s disease effect on an individual body is elusive. However, literature concedes that this disease is linked to endolymphatic hydrops (VanDerheyden & Handelsman, 2010). Meniere's also affects normal body functioning by causing hypoplasia of the vestibular aqueduct and atrophy of the endolymphatic sac. On the other end, BPV alters with quality of life of a patient by making a person unproductive caused by frequent falling cases. Imperatively, BPV is attributable to inertial changes of the cupula in the posterior canal, resulting in abnormal nystagmus and fragmentation of otolith particles (Bhattacharyya et al., n.d.). These biological changes significantly affect an individual’s reasoning and physical capability.
Assessment and Diagnosis
Understanding abnormal body changes among patients is an important step in alleviating a health condition. The main assessments for benign positional vertigo and Meniere's diseases include effects on a patient such as loss of hearing, sociological and spiritual status. This ...
