Emergency medical services (EMS) is a branch of medicine that provides first aid before the hospital treatment, especially in urgent situations. It has different members, and some are delegated to rescue while others are tasked to stabilize severe illnesses or injuries before they are transported to the hospital. This personnel is often placed in a distressing situation secondary to high demand and the need to decide promptly. Due to this, the EMS personnel are more likely to be subjected to a higher turnover rate resulting from a highly demanding job. The factors overriding the nationalistic objective of the paramedics in Israel that encouraged or forced them to leave the profession must be attended by the national government since their role is essential in the survival of many citizens in the future.
Studies have shown that contrary to the 66 per 100,000 population paramedics in the United States, Israel has only delegated 8 per 100,000 paramedics. This revealed the shortage of personnel who will provide the appropriate medical care to stabilize the patient’s situation. This is secondary to the lack of infrastructures and resources for the health providers, particularly in remote areas, compromising the quality of care given to the patients (Dopelt et al., 2019).
The study population is Israeli paramedics, and the study was conducted through a survey sent to an e-mail. Apart from the survey, the researchers also conducted in-depth interviews with fifteen participants, all of whom left the profession.
