King Goal Attainment Theory
Developed by Imogene King in the early 1960s, goal attainment theory describes a dynamic interpersonal relationship that facilitates patient growth and development for attaining specific life goals (Caceres, 2015). This theory supports a therapeutic relationship and encourages interaction and communication between nurse and patient to improve patient outcomes. According to King, nurses aim to help improve patient’s health and life quality (Fronczek et al., 2017). Therefore, the theory of goal attainment can be used in today's nursing practice by incorporating it into the nursing processes of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.
The theory illustrates that assessment occurs through interaction. Collecting patient data, including the current health status, psychological, physiological and spiritual needs, and medical history requires effective communication and interaction between the nurse and the patient (Joseph et al., 2021). This relationship builds trust, enabling nurses to collect accurate data as patients may feel free to share their personal information with the nurse.
