Similar to other advanced industrialized countries, the United States healthcare system can be characterized as a hybrid system. Although the system offers all medical services to its citizens, it also permits individuals willing to pay for advanced or faster services the ability to do so hence free scarce resources to other marginalized groups. For example, in 2014, 48% the united system spending was derived from private funds, 21% from private business and 28% from households. Typically, most health care services even though publicly financed, they are delivered privately (National Center for Health Statistics US., 2016).
Despite the high spending focused in improving the quality and patient outcomes, the healthcare system faces challenges that frame from unnecessary care, malpractice abuse, uninsured people, demographics issues, transparency issues, accessibility and affordability to quality care and medication, regulation, misplaced incentives, middlemen, political and social interferences to mention a few (Frandsen et al., 2019).
