Khanassov et al. (2016) posit that in the United States, vulnerable people include the homeless, immigrants, and refugees who are economically disadvantaged. Immigrants are "vulnerable" because of their socio-economic and immigration status. State and local policies usually bar them from accessing public funds on healthcare. By 2018, more than 44.7 million immigrants lived in the U.S. Their challenges include language barrier, unemployment, inadequate or lack of housing, cultural differences, and prejudice. Immigrants lack publicly-funded legal representation hence the need for immigrant defense funds. Nursing advocacy ensures using codes of ethics to advocate on immigrants' behalf at the hospital and federal level. Nurses would do so despite the circumstances of the immigrant.
