One reason skin-to-skin contact lacks in most institutions is because clinical decisions in most cases are based on culture. The way a mother or parents choose to handle their newborn baby is taken in consideration by the institutions. Institutions cannot impose their own will on the mother or parents because this is not part of most healthcare protocols (Kee, Hayes & McCuistion, 2015).
One benefit of skin-to-skin contact for the baby is that it helps in regulating the body temperature. According to Pillitteri (2014), before the baby was born it did not need to regulate its own temperature because the mother maintained the baby’s temperature in the womb, and so once they are born, they are yet to acquire this ability. Skin-to-skin contact is the best way to ensure that newborns are able to regulate their body temperature more effectively and so find it easier to adapt to the post-birth environment.
