A standard is a pre-established and determined practice that is accepted and used as the correct practice in a certain field. Some standards are formal while others are not formal. The formal standard is used to determine the reference and acceptable way that a professional should perform a certain task that is delegated or assigned to them (Miller, 2013). The formal standards that are set in an organization is used to determine and define the quality of work that the professional will deliver. Legal action can be taken in case of deliberate negligence of the established standards. One example of the formal standard is the Standard of Care that govern how medical staff –doctors and nurses perform and quality of work they should deliver professionally.
Standard of care is a legal oriented term that implies the extent or level that a professional having the same qualifications would perform a task under similar conditions and circumstances. However, the standard of care gives room for one to be wrong and make minor mistakes but does not allow one to be negligent.
Due to the dynamic nature of the medical field, the standards keeps on changing depending on the latest technological advancement that the standard of care has undergone (Stelmach, 2015). The nurses should thus seek to work and familiarize themselves with the latest so as to prevent unnecessary conflicts in their respective position or rank.
Legal implications that follow medical negligence are undoubtedly strict and unbending due to the sensitive matter of human life at stake. Thus strict adherence and commitment is required from the nurses.
