Risk management programs in the health care setting are critical in identifying potential risks before they happen (Alam, 2016). The risk management program currently implemented by the health care organization entails how nurses can prevent medication errors involving high-alert drugs. The plan targets nurses because they are highly involved in the administration of medications hence they are vulnerable to making medication errors. This paper primarily provides a high-level summary paper of the risk management program developed to assist a local community health organization to develop their risk management policies. It also indicates the role of The Joint Commission evaluating quality management practices, the role of administrative personnel in operational risk management programs and how the programs enhance compliance to ethical standards.
High-level summary brief
The implemented plan emphasizes the need for the health care organization to create awareness and education on how nurses can handle high-alert drugs. Often, nurses fail to follow safety measure when handling these medications due to inadequate training. However, with adequate training on how to administer the high-alert medications, nurses can minimize the possibility of making errors while administering the drugs. Additionally, technology plays a crucial role in preventing medication errors. The use of decision support systems would enable the nurses to identify the correct patients and administer the exact quantities. The systems also would assist in monitoring overlapping medications and seek advice from the medical doctors before proceeding further. Another technology is the use of “smart pumps” which administer the correct dosage of the high-alert medications.
Furthermore, the plan underscores the need for the health care organization to ensure a conducive working atmosphere for the nurses. Nurses are more prone to error when they have an excess workload. The plan under implementation indicates that the organization needs to create an enabling environment where nurses can administer high-alert drugs without distractions. The plan also encourages the health care organization to provide an enabling environment where nurses can report errors once they occur. Such a move will ensure that patients get assistance promptly once the medical errors involving high-alert medications occur. Lastly, the risk management plan demonstrates the need for health care professionals to educate family members about the high-alert medications. Patients are also responsible for administering medicines like insulin after discharge from the hospital. Nurses should know how to inform patients about administering these medications in the right way.
