1. Define and describe the field of Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study that involves analyzing the distribution and certain determinants related to health in an event of an occurrence of a disease within a specified population. The study aims at understanding and controlling the health problem (Graziella, France & Vallin, 2010). Epidemiology can also be defined as the study of determinants and distribution of the frequency of disease in humans within a particular population. The resulting rate enables epidemiologist to do a comparison of a disease occurrence across several population (Graziella, France & Vallin, 2010).
Epidemiology deals with frequency and pattern; frequency refers to the number of times a health event occurs such as the number of times cholera outbreaks has occurred within a particular area, while pattern refers to health occurrence by time, place, and persons. Time means annually, daily or weekly. Place includes the geographical variation like urban versus rural or work site and even schools. Persons include demographic factors related to the risk of illness like age, sex, marital status, social, economic status, and t environmental exposures (Graziella, France & Vallin, 2010).
2. Define and explain epidemiologic transition and describe the factors involved in epidemiologic transition
Epidemiologic transition is used to describe the disease changing patterns of a population hence the terms, mortality, and causes of death are commonly used .Epidemiologic transition is the general shift from acute infectious deficiency diseases to chronic or non-communicable disease to an advanced level (Graziella, France & Vallin, 2010). Several factors contribute to epidemiological transition. The first is the demographic changes. Epidemiologic transition is concerned with the transition from what to what. The two main component of transition includes the population change in terms of the growth trial and composition more so in age distribution meaning from the younger population to the older .The second component is the changes in patterns of mortality, which involves increase of life expectancy to a certain level (Graziella, France & Vallin, 2010).
The epidemiological transition can also be described as the development period that involves sudden and severe increase in growth rate due to medical innovation about diseases treatment hence re-leveling of population. It is a process that involves replacing an infectious disease by a chronic disease; hence, the decline in fertility rates (Graziella, France & Vallin, 2010).
Demographic Changes
