The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) website offers various resources and tools that school nurses can utilize to perform their roles better. The two resources that interest me are the activities calendar template and the yearly goals worksheet.
The activities calendar is a resource that provides a guideline to school nurses on planning the activities they will undertake during a school year (NASN, n.d.). For each service that a school nurse should provide, the calendar requires the nurse to highlight the corresponding activities to be undertaken in providing the service. In addition, the nurse indicates what activities will be carried in which month of the school year. This activity calendar can help the school nurse plan and prioritize activities depending on the needs or urgency.
The yearly goal worksheet is a resource that enables school nurses to set and articulate their yearly goals (NASN, n.d.). These goals are not only about the students but also the school nurse's professional development. Specifically, school nurses use this resource to set specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely (SMART) goals. As the NASN reveals in its position statement, school nurses are responsible for connecting education and health care to ensure that students are in good health and, consequently, can learn.
