A religion is a community of faith associated with respect for a supernatural power mostly a creator who the universe who is worshipped. Religion influences medical decisions as it provides a worldview to the religious adherence, as patients rely on specific strategies to enhance their health. The patients’ beliefs in turn influence how they deal with disease, pain, suffering and human vulnerability. Additionally, patients may view religion as giving meaning to life, upholding God’s commandment or doing the right thing. Physicians may be faced with a moral dilemma when patients make religious-based decisions with this supporting patient autonomy. However, the physicians and outcome should improve patient outcome, while the patients’ spirituality may be inconsistent with conventional medicine.
Many medical decisions like abortion, euthanasia, blood transfusion, chemotherapy and use of birth control are life altering, while religious beliefs influences the choices made (Ritter & Hoffman, 2010). People are inclined to turn to religion to guide their medical decisions in a difficult time in both beginning and the end-of life decisions (Ritter & Hoffman, 2010). Even though, there are provisions allowing abortion in some U.S states, some of the harshest critics of these provisions are religious people who believe that life begins at conception. This influences the medical decisions of diverse people who even when faced with a difficult pregnancy or birth of a child who is not fully fit proceed to on and conceive.
Another equally important aspect of religious beliefs that affects medical decisions is end-of life care. Among Christians death is imply a preparation for the afterlife, while the Native Americans may separate good and bad death, and this determines perceptions on the role of the spirit in life and death.
