QSEN is a popular acronym in nursing that refers to Quality and Safety Education in Nursing. It offers perspectives that are vital in the field of nursing. Over the past decade, the healthcare system has implemented numerous policies that show dedication to the pursuit of quality healthcare and education. Therefore, healthcare practitioners need to understand the QSEN competencies and how it influences best practices. This essay is an analysis of QSEN and its influence on teamwork and collaboration in nursing,
American Nurse Association refers to QSEN as initiatives put in place to help align nursing education and practices. Nurses are encouraged to redesign how they can deliver quality healthcare but also keep up with safety standards. In the words of QSEN founder, “QSEN helps nurses to identify and bridge the gaps between the current state of healthcare and a better version.” The main aim is to involve future nurses in improving healthcare by equipping them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Consequently, QSEN provides six competencies; patient-centered care, evidence-based practice, teamwork and collaboration, Safety, Quality Improvement, and Informatics.
Teamwork and collaboration make up one of the six competencies of QSEN. Current healthcare policies show an increased reliance on teams from different specialties such as nursing specialties, therapy, social work. This is because there is an increased rate of death in the US due to medical errors. Teamwork deficiencies, in particular, make up 70-80 percent of the country’s deadly medical errors CITATION Ann16 \l 1033 (Mayo & Woolley, 2016). For instance, failures in communication are a cause of preventable patient harm and a high contributing factor to other underlying risks. Consequently, healthcare leadership is invested in the improvement of strategies that allow team based-approaches to thrive.
