Over the years, diverse health care measures have been developed as indicators of health care quality and safety. The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicator is a measure that offers periodical and yearly reports, structure and results indicators from different units in hospitals. Such outcomes offer healthcare facilities with nationwide relative information on quality improvement and development of the association among nurse staffing and patient outcome (Montalvo, 2007).
Typically, data is derived from different hospital units such as medical /surgical units, pediatric, psychiatric, critical care, step down, and rehabilitation units. The NDQI measure has gained acceptance and is used by over 2000 hospitals nationwide. The NDQI measures various aspects like nursing hours per patient day, fall rates and injuries, nurse turnover rate, registered nurse education and certification, bloodstream infection rates, assault rates, nursing staff skill mix, readmission rates, physical restraint prevalence, pain assessment to mention a few (Montalvo, 2007). Therefore, this study seeks to analyze data provided in the (Inpatient Rehab Unit) dashboard and develop a nursing care plan for enhancement of poorly performing indicators.
Analysis of the dashboard data
According to Montalvo (2007), these indicators are nursing sensitive, hence they provide effective nursing care interventions that prevent patients from risk factors as well as adverse conditions. Currently, organizations overseeing healthcare such as a center of Medicare and Medicaid Services require health facilities to submit reports on healthcare performance to the public. The sample dashboard (Rehab Unit) comprises of four main categories which include “Nurse Sensitive Service line/Unit- Specific Indicators”, “Nurse General Sensitive Indicators”, NDQI data and “Nurse-Sensitive Patient Satisfaction Survey Indicators”. Besides the dashboard portrays a strong understanding of healthcare dashboards as well as the significant benefits in the measurement of care and protection. Typically, the overall performance shows an upward improvement over time. However, some elements show some greater improvements such as Nursing Hours per Patient Day as compared to others like “registered nurse care hours".
The Nursing Hours per Patient Day (NHPPD) shows a significant improvement across the four quartiles with high variance recorded in the second quartile Q2FY09 and lowest in the first Q1FY10. Registered Nurse care Hrs. shows a poor performance across the whole period. The variance increases significantly across the whole period with low recorded in the second quartile and the highest recorded in the first quartile of the following year.
