Teach Back Experience Summary
Introduction
Health literacy is a perplexing issue in the nursing field. However, some patients have little literacy on health, while most of them have none. Little or no knowledge about health issues can be a life-threatening aspect to patients. It also interferes with their self-care maintenance (Centrella-Nigro & Alexander 2017). This leads to a misunderstanding of instructions given by health care providers. Issues like poor health, as a result, can lead to costly medications and increased expenditure treating these conditions. Teach back is an efficient method in addressing all these issues and outlining measures followed to combat their spread. The method uses a one-on-one approach to reduce cases of misinterpretation of information. Here is a summary of my teaching experience during the time I dealt with the patients.
Key Information
I conducted proper teaching on a diet. Breastfeeding mothers needed this information before delivery for this uncovered they did not take into consideration the six months breastfeeding period to the kids. The infants' immunity needs this milk that the two first time mothers I encountered never observes but started giving them pacifiers. Sucking pacifiers, although not bad, should not be in the first two weeks. The tools can interfere with breastfeeding since their sizes are different from the mother's breast. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the introduction of the pacifiers after breastfeeding be well established. One of the two moms was not ready to breastfeed due to little advice on how to handle the nipple pinching associated with first time sucking.
How the Training Went
Out of all the patients, three-quarters did not remember their health records. They seem confused by every question I asked. Moreover, in administering the program, it is challenging. The patients remembered what they learned just for a few seconds. After 10 minutes, most of them forgot everything; thus, a demonstration was necessary. Demonstration touched on almost all the topics handled, including breastfeeding and postpartum. Some were also advised to ask experienced family or close members to show them what was to be done in case they had slubts and could not reach our training facilities. Besides, the labor patient presented many challenges. She was dozing off after half an hour. We had to take several breaks in between the lessons, which delayed the process. For first time mothers, the first one had forgotten her credit cards hard cash. We had to step in as the hospital to provide for the kid. The labor patient was also a serial alcoholic. Advising her to stop took a toll, although it was successful, we had to keep in touch and do a follow up to ensure she reduces taking the drugs for a healthy delivery.
Mothers and infants need to be prepared for the postnatal activities that come in. The mothers needed lessons to handle family issues that became broader with the child coming in. There is an infant to take care of while attending to other issues like exercise to maintain body shape and contract the tissues like the uterus. The postpartum patients were fascinated by learning about body chan...
