The United States had little control over the high mortality rates of Americans in the last 100 years (Cleveland Clinic, 2017). According to Hoyert (2012), the reduction in death rates has been used as a measure of the efforts public health initiatives have made to improve the health of the U.S. populations. A majority of the objectives contained in the Healthy People 2020 are based on the reduction of death rates. Today, with the help of public health initiatives, there is a marked decline in the number of deaths resulting from infectious diseases in the 20th century (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1999). The main causes of increased mortality rates over the last 100 years were heart diseases, infant and child deaths, HIV/AIDS, tobacco smoking, stroke and cancer. In the past 100 years, there were no vaccines or antibiotics for infections. TB was little understood and there were no means for disease diagnosis.
