Synopsis of the Book
The story begins with a chat between the author and the general surgeon as they trade about war stories and their experiences in their healthcare and other specific professions. Their talk is about how healthcare providers attended a patient who came with a stub injury from a party. The nurses are aware of all the required actions to be taken but have no specific procedure outlined to be followed while conducting surgery for a stubbed patient. As the speaker (John) explains, the nurses were confused in preparation for conducting an operation for the patient as it caught them unprepared. The surgery was conducted in a messy and unorganized manner due to the lack of specific checklist in the healthcare system for dealing with emergencies in the surgical room. Another case involved a cancer patient who was undergoing heart failure surgery when the monitor went off when almost everything was done. In such a situation, the anesthesiologist worked with assumptions instead of having specific facts about the patient’s condition professionally. The author, therefore, explains that there is a substantial realm which is within human reach in controlling extreme cases which endangers the lives of a human being. Despite the existence of modern and advanced equipment for ensuring safety, the issue of deaths is increasing as the protocols fail to provide approaches and checklists for addressing existing challenges in different environments.
