Sustainability Initiative Stakeholder Engagement Analysis and Strategy
Healthcare organizations consume vast amounts of energy, contributing to high energy budgets and overall environmental problems associated with energy consumption. Healthcare facilities use more energy than most building types and spend more than $6.5 billion yearly on energy (United States Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], n.d.). In many hospitals, heating, ventilation, and air condition (HVAC) account for a large percentage of energy consumption. At Houston Methodist, the energy consumption is high at about 60MW per month, which translates to a $5 million energy cost per month (NRG, n.d.). An energy-saving initiative focused on enhancing HVAC performance is necessary to ensure that the hospital utilizes some energy-saving opportunities in its current HVAC system.
Part I: Stakeholder Identification Analysis
This initiative's success is dependent on the support of internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the support of distinguished partners and community leaders will be instrumental in pushing the initiative forward. Below is a breakdown of key stakeholders, partners, and community leaders.
Key Internal and External Stakeholders
The critical internal stakeholders include the chief executive officer, the chief operating officer, and the facility managers. These are the hospital's senior management team members and have a say in allocating financial resources. According to the EPA (n.d.), hospitals have many urgent needs, and the senior management gets to decide which needs will be prioritized. Involving them in sustainability initiatives can ensure that energy initiatives are given priority. In addition, senior management's involvement can ensure there is organization-wide support. Other internal stakeholders include hospital staff, that can function as advocates for the initiative by creating awareness of why energy-saving efforts are necessary.
The critical external stakeholders include patients who rely on the HVAC system for comfort while in the hospital. Patients are essential because they are also concerned with sustainability, and the management can consider the feedback they give about sustainability during decision-making. As Richie (2020) reveals, patients’ voice is necessary for pushing healthcare organizations toward green or clean healthcare. In addition, energy advisors and experts from government agencies or energy-focused organizations are essential stakeholders because their opinion about energy consumption and energy-saving opportunities carry significant weight.
Partnerships
One of the significant partnerships necessary for this initiative's success is the partnership with NRG. Houston Methodist has, in the past, partnered with NRG to develop smarter energy solutions to help the hospital reduce its energy consumption and related costs (NRG, n.d.). This partnership is essential because already, NRG has an overview of the extensive energy consumption at the hospital. Also, NRG is a source of expertise in smarter energy and can provide helpful i...
