Sleep Quality
The quality of sleep can as well be used to describe an individual’s quality of life. Lack of sleep comes with a number of challenges that when they last for a long time may lead to a chronic health condition. Sleep plays an essential role in the overall emotional, mental and physical well being of adolescents. Their quality of sleep has an impact on their cognitive development and consequently on their learning and performance in schools. Poor sleep quality among adolescents is mostly contributed by bad sleep behavior and physical activities.
Engaging in physical activities before bedtime can be detrimental to the overall sleep quality. Most adolescents are students; this makes their brain to remain active for long hours even when they are supposed to sleep. Also, most of them are under care of their parents who may assign them duties that will keep them alert up to the time they are supposed to sleep. Engaging in physical activities before sleep results to increase in sympathetic nervous system activity which leads to increase in heartbeat and eventually alertness making it difficult to sleep (Lin et al. 2018). To handle this problem effectively, a behavioral intervention approach could be appropriate. Parents should be educated on the negative impacts of keeping adolescents engaged in activities before they sleep.
