Quality healthcare systems, increased competency, and improved patient outcomes are a result of good leadership in the nursing profession (Al-Sawai, 2013). There can never be a quality nursing environment without the presence of inspiring and engaging nursing leaders. Leadership in the nursing profession is about serving others; it is about being mindful of the healthcare needs of patients and working well with other staff members. The best way to serve others in the nursing profession is to recognize the needs of others and put them first (Fahlberg & Toomey, 2016). Through this, patients are able to gain access to quality care and nursing staff are able to perform at the highest level possible. Additionally, serving in the nursing profession is about stewardship. It is the quality utilization of available resources to effectively meet the needs of others without, primarily, focusing on individual rewards (Fahlberg & Toomey, 2016). Value-based service should be the epitome of the nursing profession.
Serving in the nursing profession is more aligned to the servant-leadership paradigm. According to the servant-leader paradigm, a leader is a servant first (Fahlberg & Toomey, 2016). This means that serving other people is the guiding principle of a leader. In the same way, leadership in the nursing profession is about recognizing the significance of serving others with utmost empathy.
