The Harm of Gendered Beliefs and Stereotypes Regarding Sexuality

Essay Instructions:

Topic:
How are both men and women harmed by gendered beliefs about sexuality?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of being seen as a sexual object or a sexual subject?
How do the videos this week speak to these issues?
Students response: Men and women are both harmed by gendered beliefs about sexuality because they both can suffer from experiencing double standards imposed by society that are based in gender norms. Women are expected to be innocent, pure, passive, and less aggressive than men. They are expected to act like a lady and let a man pursue them. If a women is the aggressor in a relationship or wants to express her sexuality she is negatively labeled. Men are expected to be manly, strong, and aggressive. Unlike women, they are encouraged to express their sexuality. They are not expected to cry, or show any signs of femininity or weakness. If a man was to portray any signs of femininity he would be labeled and ridiculed.
The advantages of being seen as a sexual object or subject is that an individual can be seen as desirable and receive attention or admirers. Men and women who are seen as sexual objects can use their allure to work for their advantage in certain situations. They can easily manipulate others or be put on pedestal. The disadvantages are that it can cause unwanted attention for some, and can cause individuals to fall prey to incidents of rape, human trafficking, or prostitution. Another disadvantage is that individuals may not be taken seriously due to them being considered a sexual object.
Judith Butler gives a perfect example of how gendered beliefs about sexuality can be harmful. She tells a story of a boy who walked with a "sway" in his hips. Since men are "supposed" to walk a certain way, he was ridiculed and thrown off a bridge because of his sexuality. I think that its wrong to judge anyone for how they choose to live their life or express themselves. We all have our own personal views and beliefs, so no one should be denied their right to be who they want to be.

Discussion Response
I agree that in most societies, some gendered beliefs about sexuality do harm both men and women. It is a fact that most communities across the globe have a set standard of behavior expected in different genders. If a person does not conform to the expected behaviors, he/she will likely face rejection, ridicule, resistance, and sometimes punishment. It is true that in most communities, women are expected to be submissive, innocent, less aggressive, children bearer, and a housewives while men on the other hand, are expected to be leaders, protectors, breadwinners, strong and aggressive. For a long time, these beliefs and stereotypes have prevented people from pursuing their dreams which go against the community expectation for fear of being ridiculed or rejected. There have been cases where women have been denied some job opportunities just because those j...
