Healthcare professionals need a Code of Ethics that seeks to guide as they undertake their day to day activities. The code of ethics ensures that all healthcare professionals have well-structured obligations that they should adhere to ensure the well-being of the patients. Codes of ethics are essential to professionals as they tend to lay out all the rules and behaviors that should be followed as they undertake their daily activities. Some of the healthcare professionals that have a clear and well-written code of ethics are Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Practitioners. The code of ethics plays an essential role in ensuring emergency medical services (ems) practitioners follow certain practices during their service delivery in the healthcare sector.
EMS Practitioners' code of ethics comprises several obligations that those working in this field must pledge to follow. One of the essential aspects is that EMS practitioners have to commit themselves to save lives, reducing suffering, and promoting the health of their patients. More so, in the code of ethics, EMS practitioners are required to pledge towards providing services in line with human needs and upholding dignity for human lives without any discrimination. The code of ethics also requires EMS practitioners to respect patient information by keeping its confidential unless it is needed through the law. Furthermore, the code of ethics requires EMS practitioners to engage in their social media activities and in a way that does not cause embarrassment to professionals in this field professionally. In the code of ethics, EMS practitioners are obliged to take responsibility for all their professional actions and judgments. Besides, professionals in this field are required to understand the regulations and legislation related to emergency medical services (National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, 2013). Another essential requirement in the code of ethics is that EMS practitioners should be willing to desist from engaging in any unethical procedures. They should also be committed to reporting any unwarranted misconducts and behaviors to the relevant authorities (National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, 2013). In this sense, these are some of the obligations and practices that EMS practitioners must adhere to based on their Code of Ethics.
Notably, the EMS code of ethics has designed to ensure that it covers several major areas related to professionals in this field. In essence, the Code of Ethics tends to regulate how EMS practitioners conduct themselves in their workplaces and their personal and social lives. For example, Code Ethics has given guidelines on what is required of EMS practitioners during their service delivery to patients. Also, it regulates their behaviors in social contexts, such as social media platforms. In this sense, a Code of Ethics tends to cover all major areas related to the professional and non-professional lives of EMS practitioners.
