Organizational Risk Management Interview
A brief assessment of the organization’s risk management program, including what works well and what could work better (the pros and cons)
Bethesda Hospital’s risk management program does have certain aspects that work well and others that appear wanting. Some of the aspects or facets that work well include:
* Environmental hygiene – one of the most common sources of transmission of infections is the environment. Well, environmental surfaces can be a quick way of transmitting infections. There are certain microbial bacteria that are resistant to some of the methods hospitals employ to help maintain hygiene. So, they often survive and can easily be transmitted from one patient to another. Patients can become infected by simply coming into contact with these surfaces. However, environmental hygiene is one of the risk management aspects at Bethesda Hospital that appears to work well. The environment is always kept clean and disinfection is a daily occurrence.
* Vaccinations – infections do not spread through the environment or through the sick only. However, infections can also spread through the staff members who are given the responsibility of taking care of the sick. The staff members can thus be the people behind the spread of certain infections. Well, being aware of this fact, Bethesda Hospital has employed measures to ensure that this scenario never occurs. So, all staff members are given the recommended vaccinations. This makes it easier and possible for the organization to help prevent the spread of infections through the staff members. This strategy does work well at Bethesda and will continue to help ensure that the hospital’s staff and patients remain free from the threat of infections from the staff members.
* Surveillance – surveillance is simply the method of gathering data, studying it, and learning the patterns of an infection to help influence the outcome. It is important for healthcare organizations to collect data that will help them study and understand the patterns of an infection. By employing surveillance tactics, an organization can ensure that it regularly assesses its infection prevention protocol to help ensure that it is always up to par. Additionally, surveillance can help ensure that an organization is able to measure its outcomes, assess the care processes it employs, and finally, work towards promoting patient care. The last step in surveillance is data dissemination which must happen if this data is to be useful or translate to positive outcomes. Well, at Bethesda, surveillance has been found wanting and this is because of the slackness in data collection. In surveillance, data collection is quite important and if not done correctly, it can negatively affect the entire process and essence of surveillance.
* Research or evidence follow-up – well, it is essential for any healthcare organization to ensure that it is always up-to-date with the current findings regarding infections. A healthcare organization cannot be effective in its fight to prevent the spread of infectious diseases if it is not current or up-to-date in the findi...
