A patient has a right to integrate alternative medicine as part of their treatment while under the care of a practitioner. According to the World Medical Association patients the right to freedom of choice in the type of treatment as long the treatment is effective, timely and is medically necessary and desired by the patient (Boon et al., 2000).
A practitioner does have a right to refuse care of the patient if they see other treatment elsewhere as well. The reason for rejection may be or moral or religious grounds. It is not a requirement for a practitioner to prescribe medicine or provide treatment that the practitioner deems medically ineffective or ethically inappropriate. In this case, the physician should discuss his reasons for refusal with the patient, inform the patient of other providers or resources that respond to their needs. The practitioner should document the discussion in the patient medical record (crane 2018).
