Personal values and beliefs guide our actions and decisions in relation to our families, work, and life in general. They form the core of our beings and differentiate us from each other. The most important aspect of personal values is that they define us and keep us focused toward a certain direction.
I strongly believe in committing to a cause that provides a greater good to all humanity, guided by empathy and compassion. That is why I chose nursing as a career because through the nursing practice, I can be able to practice the mentioned personal values and create a positive impact on society. In some cases, this involves sacrificing a part of my happiness and comfort to help others, and sharing what I have with others. Being a Christian who has very strong faith in God, I believe in living a life guided by the biblical teachings of Christianity, and emulating the life that men of God have led in service to others. I place a very high value to human life and as such, life to me is precious and should be respected by all. Thus, my personal values and spiritual beliefs are intertwined and have formed the core of my being.
I believe that health-care is a basic need and should be accessible to every individual at affordable costs. However, accessibility and affordability of health-care are two different things because issues such as poverty affect affordability, even when health-care is available. But, in my opinion, the quality of health-care should not necessarily be influenced by the cost. I think that every individual should be able to access quality health-care regardless of the cost because the quality is highly influenced by the practices of individual health-care professionals. This is in line with fairness and justice, which as described by Cranmer and Nhemachena (2013), involves sharing out of services equally and evenly. This is in line with my values on service and greater good to all mankind.
