Radiographic Technologist
Job Description
Radiographic technologists are also known as radiologic technologists. Their work mainly involves the use of diagnostic imaging tools to perform CTs, MRIs, and X-rays (Zippia, 2020). The creation and interpretation of diagnostic images in hospitals is quite crucial to enhancing patient outcomes. So, radiographic technologists play a major role in ensuring that the healthcare needs of a society are met.
The scope of practice for radiographic technologists is quite wide. According to the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (2017), the scope of practice for radiographic technologists is divided into three main categories. These categories include image production, safety, and patient care. With image production, one has to be equipped with equipment operation, quality assurance, and image acquisition as well as evaluation or interpretation expertise. Safety, on the other hand, is divided into two main areas and these include radiation protection and having a grasp of radiation physics and radiobiology. Finally, with patient care, radiographic technologists are charged with patient interactions and management.
Like any other field in healthcare, radiographic technologists operate under certain guidelines. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (2019) lists 11 guidelines or codes within which radiographic technologists should operate. As indicated by the ARRT, these standards are “intended to assist Certificate Holders and Candidates in maintaining a high level of ethical conduct and in providing for the protection, safety, and comfort of patients” (2019). As is often the case, failure to adhere to these standards could negatively impact the goal to enhance patient outcomes.
Education/Registration/Certification
To work as a radiographic technologist, one must have met some educational requirements. Well, an associate’s degree is needed and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics or BLS (2020), this is “the most common educational requirement for radiologic and MRI technologists.” However, one can also consider other post-secondary programs that will eventually earn them either “graduate certificates or bachelor’s degrees” (BLS, 2020). Either of the above will make one eligible to work in the radiography field.
There are different institutions that offer a radiologic technology program. One institution goes by the name of Xavier University. Xavier is located in Cincinnati and Norwood, Ohio. As per their website, they offer a two-year “Associate of Science in Radiologic Technology” degree (Xavier Unviersity, 2020). The program offered at Xavier University takes 73 semester hours and students are taken through radiologic technology and liberal arts courses. The radiologic technology program is categorized under College of Professional Sciences. Here, fees are divided into full-time students and part-time students. For full-time students, cost per semester is approximately $29,655. For part-time students, the cost per credit hour is $2,244. Upon completion, a student receives an “Associate Degree in Science and are eligible ...
