Reflections on the Tools
The tools provide a rigorous approach towards exploring epidemics in the hospitals and also in the public sphere. The CDC provides a tool that breaks down the outbreak of a disease and analyses the disease in order to identify the source of the outbreak and the interventions necessary to handle the epidemic. This tool gives very ideal cases that the learner goes through in analyzing the affected population, determining the nature of the diseases and the type of interventions that are required (CDC, 2017). On the other hand the training tool provided by the office of diseases prevention and health program focuses on the cases of transmission within a healthcare organization. It emphasizes on the need for teamwork, collaboration, communication, cleanliness and patient safety practices among the health care providers in order to deal with the spread of hospital transmissions as a way of improving patient outcomes (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2017). Disease prevention programs are based on epidemiological investigations and the interventions should be in line with the nature of the diseases that can only be ascertained through laboratory tests (Ibrahim, 2002). The epidemiological methods provided in these tools are very cognizant with what actually happens in ideal healthcare practice and have emphasized on evidence based practice in dealing with diseases outbreaks in healthcare practice.
I once was involved in the investigation of a transmission within a healthcare organization. We tried our best in the investigation of the transmissions in the hospital and we were not so much detailed as highlighted in the video training by the office of disease prevention and health program. Our investigations were based on assumptions and instead of using immunization to stop the spread of the disease we simply separated the patients from those who were not affected. This strategy was very retrogressive as we received new patients continuously despite the strategy.
