This paper reviews the case of a patient MM an 82-year-old, presented at a Long Term Care Facility/Nursing Home with COVID 19 with a primary diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease that causes respiratory problems such as difficulty breathing and chest discomfort from coughing. As a registered nurse student, it is my duty to provide quality standard care and management for this patient. Also, I am responsible for minimizing transmission and exposure to other people in the hospital. This study aims to review the quality of care for patients who tested positive for COVID-19. The patient's name will be withheld for confidentiality purposes. I will address the patient as MM for this essay.
During a night shift at the nursing home, I received a patient MM an 82-year old male, who recently tested positive for COVID-19. After wearing my PPE and isolating the triage, I assessed and recorded his vital signs, symptoms, and past medical history. Secondly, I briefed the resident on various measures to prevent disease transmission. After the assessment, I administered Tylenol PRN and two puffs of Ventolin inhaler and initiated supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula as advised by the physician.
Analysis
This experience made me feel anxious as the resident kept removing the nasal cannula which destabilized his oxygen levels. Although I have the correct information dealing with a COVID 19 patient with an underlying condition is critical and can be draining emotionally and physically. However, with time the resident understood the preventive measures and the importance of abiding by them. He also felt cared for due to my frequent visit to the isolation ward to monitor his oxygen levels. Although it was part of my duty to administer the Tylenol PRN, the Ventolin inhaler two puffs PRN put the patient at ease and stabilized his condition.
