At St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, a Latino patient who had recently been diagnosed with asthma came for treatment after an asthma exacerbation. The patient is a farmworker and strongly believes in traditional healers, specifically those referred to as Curanderos (they use psychic and spiritual healing). As a result of this belief, the patient had failed to adhere to the medication she had been given when she was first diagnosed and could not take the medication to manage the attack. However, the head of the respiratory department advised the healthcare team that was providing her with care to coordinate with her Curandero and it was through this collaboration that the patient finally started adhering to medication.
