Proton pump inhibitors and antacids are drugs with multiple indications in esophageal and gastric pathology. They are widely prescribed and are mostly available over the counter in pharmacies. Like many other medications, they have side effects and interactions with other drugs (Ben Ghezala et al., 2022). They act by modifying the gastric pH in their particular case, and absorption could be compromised for specific products.
Let us consider a patient on a quinolone such as levofloxacin for germ-susceptible urinary tract infection. The same patient has been on a Proton Pump Inhibitor due to acute gastritis for a few days. Concomitant absorption of the antibiotic while taking the Proton Pump Inhibitor will be reduced, with the predictable course being the persistence of the infection. The urinary signs that the patient presents will persist despite the treatment.
