There must be well-coordinated monitoring when a patient takes an antacid or proton pump inhibitor and is also under prescribed antibiotics (Jun et al., 2021). The common antibiotics that interact with the PPIs or antacids include clarithromycin, tetracyclines, and levofloxacin (Kuna et al., 2019). The antibacterial drugs function by suppressing the amount of acid available in the stomach. Consequently, a reduced intake or absorption of other medications can result in minimal effectiveness. In other words, PPIs and antacids alter the PH of the gastrointestinal tract, which may result in suppressed levels of antibiotics in the bloodstream. The interaction can also take place if there is a simultaneous intake of antibacterial drugs and antacids or PPIs. Furthermore, the situation can occur if the drug is administered on an empty stomach and an antacid follows later in the day.
The clinical management of the interaction of antibiotics interaction with PPIs or antacid drugs involves taking the medications at least one hour before or two hours after taking the PPI or antacid medicines. This is due to the high chances of varied interaction between the antibacterial and the antacid medications, which results in low stomach acidity and reduced drug efficacy, causing side ef...
