Evaluation, Planning, and Design: War on Drug Policy
Criminal justice policies are a critical part of the law in society. Policies are essential in criminal justice by representing and ensuring the societal members comply and conform to the provided regulations. Policies vary from national security, terrorism, and intimate partner violence to drug control. The major criminal justice policies were established in the 1960s due to an increased crime rate, which forced the presidential commission to establish funding models, programs, and policies to reduce crime (The War on Drugs, 2021). However, its evaluation is necessary to understand whether the policy is effective. The evaluation should be based on reliable models and theories for actual data interpretation. The paper evaluates the war on drugs policy.
Description of the Criminal Justice Policy
The war on drugs policy is a well-coordinated effort established in 1971 by former president Nixon Richard (The War on Drugs, 2021). The policy aims to eliminate illegal drugs in society. The main strategies of the policy include incarceration, enforcement, and increasing penalties among drug offenders. The policy advocates for increased funding of the drug control agencies to ensure drug management is effective and successful. Initially, the war on drugs was not taken seriously until 1981, when adverse repercussions such as increased crime were noted. Therefore, the policy is also based on a social campaign to educate the public on illegal drugs.
The war on drugs policy is also critical due to increased offenses in the last decade. For instance, in 2019 alone, 73,204 out of 158,107 reported offenses were crimes (The War on Drugs, 2021). Drug offenses are almost double the normal offenses, which raises a major concern in society. The policy is also essential since it combines different efforts from criminal agencies, such as law enforcement, to combat the increased cases. Therefore, evaluating and reforming is necessary to reduce the crimes related to drug offenses.
Importance of the Proposed Evaluation
The proposed evaluation is essential since it will identify the key areas where the policy has failed using necessary models and theories. The policy has failed since the rate of drug offenses is alarming and has also increased different problems, such as drug-related violence. Therefore, evaluating the root cause of such problems will restore justice to society. The proposed evaluation is also significant since it will be based on primary data collected using valid approaches to offer reliable recommendations. The policy evaluation will also identify why the initial interventions have failed and take new actions to avoid similar failures in the future.
