For addiction clients to be treated well, their clinical or medical profiles must be protected under all circumstances. Counseling is an effective alcohol and drug treatment strategy. Substance abuse counselors provide a proper support system to addicts by establishing trusting relationships with their clients. In particular, so much information is shared by the addicts to their therapists, and confidentiality should be warranted (Berton, 2014). Counselors build and sustain their relationships with their clients by safeguarding the information disclosed to them by patients for the purpose of treatment.
Privileged communication prohibits addiction counselors from sharing their clients’ information. The client has the right to privacy and should be informed in advance under what circumstances, when, or to whom his or her personal information can be shared to others (Berton, 2014).
