Blood pressure can be explained as the force that pushes blood against the walls of blood arteries. When measuring blood pressure, two numbers are used namely systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure. While looking at these two numbers, normal blood pressure reading needs to be less than 120 for systolic pressure and less than 80 for diastolic pressure. It is crucial to have one’s blood pressure checked from time to time to help ensure that it is within a healthy range. Having these routine checks helps to make sure that instances of high blood pressure are discovered early. One thing that people need to understand is that it is possible to feel and even look okay while still having high blood pressure. So, a visit to the doctor is crucial. Today, some of the main issues or hot buttons with regard to high blood pressure are that being diagnosed with high blood pressure could also indicate increased cancer risk (Mayo Clinic, 2019). The above is according to a Mayo clinic-led study that made use of 488 cardiac patients. Aside from the above, the American College of Cardiology conducted a study that showed that taking a nap every day could help ensure that one’s blood pressure is maintained at a healthy reading. Napping according to this study leads to a noticeable drop in one’s blood pressure and people should consider taking naps on a daily basis (American College of Cardiology, 2019).
High blood pressure has major potential impacts on people’s health and wellness. One of the major impacts of high blood pressure includes damage to arteries thus leading to heart attacks. It is possible that arteries can be damaged and this can prevent blood flow to the muscles of the heart. The consequential effect is that one becomes vulnerable to heart attacks. Aside from a heart attack, high blood pressure can also lead to strokes, heart failures, vision loss, kidney diseases or failure, and sexual dysfunction. The above means or asks that people become aware of their condition and see their doctors regarding blood pressure. The risk factors for high blood pressure are many and include age, being overweight or obese, eating too much salt, race, one’s family history, using tobacco among other factors. However, there are several prevention techniques that can be used. These can include eating healthy foods, avoiding the use of alcohol, having a proper stress management program, getting regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and managing one’s weight.
