The Weymouth Water Treatment Plant

Essay Instructions:

Visit a facility or field-site that performs an activity to improve environmental health. Describe in detail the problem this facility is attempting to resolve as well as the specific actions that are being performed. Prepare a 1-2 page written report of your visit and include illustrations (illustrations do not count toward the written length).
I am giving you flexibility on choosing which facility you visit; however, some examples are: a drinking water treatment facility, a wastewater treatment facility, a landfill or waste incinerator, an environmental remediation field site (i.e., clean up of a waste spill). You will need my approval if you choose something other than this. Many of these sites are open to the public (especially if you mention that it is for a college class), but you will typically have to schedule an appointment first.
I will grade this more rigorously than a normal homework assignment. The maximum number of extra credit points is 2 on your final grade. In other words, if you have an 88 final grade and receive a 10/10 on this assignment, your final grade will be 90 (the difference between a B and an A).
This must be completed before December 13.

The equivalent of the water that the plant treats can be estimated to an amount that would fill the Rose Bowl with a period of four hours. This makes a capacity of approximately 520 million gallons in one day. The main problem that is being resolved in this water plant is the removal of salt from the waters of river Colorado hence making it conducive to human use and the treatment of the northern California supplies. The treatment process does not only involve the removal of salt but also involves the disinfection and removal of suspended particles from the water.
Among the processes being used to purify the water at The Weymouth Water Treatment Plant is the use of chlorine. The chlorine plays a substantial role in the disinfection of the water. Chlorine is a chemical that kills bacteria and other harmful substances in the water. As a result, this b...
