Due to the varying healthcare needs of patients from different cultural backgrounds, there has been a need to provide nursing care that is culturally competent. Cultural competency or proficiency refers to the ability to respond to the health needs of populations from different racial and cultural backgrounds with high levels of cultural sensitivity (Govere, Fioravanti, & Tuite, 2016). Thus, culturally proficient nursing care involves the provision of care while maintaining high levels of cultural competency. There are many factors that influence the implementation of culturally proficient nursing care. This paper focuses on how the nursing metaparadigm affects the implementation of culturally proficient nursing care.
The nursing metaparadigm outlines the central ideas that guide nursing practice as a discipline (Nikfarid, et al., 2018). The four basic nursing metaparadigm are the person, nursing, health, and environment components. The person component focuses on the person receiving care (Branch, et al., 2016). This component also focuses on other elements that are important to the individual, such as family, religion, and culture. Thus, this component has the ability to influence culturally proficient nursing care because the nurses have to understand and respect the culture of the individual so that the individual can have positive health outcomes.
The nursing component focuses on how the nurse will apply their skills and knowledge of the discipline to provide care (Branch, et al., 2016). The nurses’ attributes also matter in this component. Deliktas, et al. (2019) indicate that the nursing component assesses how a nurse will use the tools available to them to create a relationship with the patient and deliver the best health outcomes. Nurses cannot form trusting relationships with patients if they are culturally incompetent. Thus, this concept influences cultural proficiency by enhancing the creation of a mutual, long-lasting relationship between nurses and patients.
